One example is the sixty-four-page pamphlet called “The Sun’s Greeley Campaign Songster,” published and distributed by the New York Sun in 1872 and authored by Amos. The pamphlet contained lyrics— most written by Cummings and often set to popular tunes of the day—that poked fun at “Useless” Grant, the Republican candidate for president of the United States, and supported Horace Greeley, the Democratic candidate (often referred to in song as “the farmer from Chappaqua”). Although the Sun had no love for Greeley or his rival newspaper, the New York Tribune, the Sun’s editorial staff and publisher always backed the Democratic Party.

There also are small numbers of published speeches and correspondence—even a menu—in a number of repositories, including the Library of Congress, University of California–Berkeley, Georgetown University, University of Nevada, New Jersey Historical Society, Radcliffe College, and Syracuse University.
