Corpus-driven linguists question the ‘underlying assumptions behind many well established theoretical positions’ (Tognini-Bonelli, 2001: 48), stating that pre-corpus theories need to be re-examined in the light of evidence from corpora. , 2006: 9–10). Rayson’s (2008) data-driven method thus combines elements of both the corpus-based and the corpus-driven approaches. It relies on pre-existing part-of-speech tagsets but considers corpus data as ‘the starting point of a path-finding expedition that will allow linguists to uncover new grounds, new categories and formulate new hypotheses on the basis of the patterns that were observed’ (De Cock, 2003: 197).
