Adventure travel activities can be enjoyed year round, but a knowledge of the climate is critical. San Francisco has a cool summer. " The rains of Northern California may last from October through April, pelting the coast, especially the north coast from Eureka to Crescent City. Further inland, the rains are blocked, creating more arid environments, except in the high mountains. This causes the precipitation to fall as snow on the west faces of the Sierra. From April through October there is little rain, except for summer thunderstorms in the mountains.

Chapter 5 outlines the Shasta Cascade Region, a vast and lesser known wilderness and lake area of California. Shasta Cascade is the main houseboating place in Northern California and the West, primarily on Shasta Lake. If you are a hiker or backpacker, you will also enjoy one of our lesser-known national parks, Lassen. Chapter 6 takes you east from San Francisco into the mountains, The Sierra and Gold Country: Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. This is the great downhill and cross-country ski area of California, especially around Lake Tahoe.
